April 2017 – St. Gregory’s School helps to make ‘Matt’s Dream’ classroom a reality
The kids at St. Gregory’s School in Carleton Place took on a unique challenge this Lenten season, to raise money to build “Matt’s Dream” classroom for SchoolBOX.
Matt Smart is a young man with a remarkable heart for kids and a commitment to the cause of education for children globally. Matt was the recipient of an Amazing People youth scholarship, which allowed him to travel to Nicaragua and participate in his first build with SchoolBOX in 2014. During the trip, Matt was touched by the friendships he made at the Marcos Lainez school, where he was helping to build a new classroom. Matt decided not only to return to Nicaragua some day, but also to raise money to build his very own classroom. Matt returned to Nicaragua to build the Gilberto Siles School in 2016, this time as the leader of an enthusiastic group of Ottawa Valley youth. With the help of his community, Matt began the “Matt’s Dream” campaign, to raise funds for a new classroom to be built in 2018. Currently a grade 12 student at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville, Matt visited St.Gregory’s last month to raise awareness about SchoolBOX and invite the students to help him fulfill his dream of building his very own classroom in Nicaragua.
Every $5 that a student raised added one “brick” to the giant mural of a classroom hung in the foyer of the school, representing the new classroom they are trying to build. Pam Landry, a teacher at St.Gregory’s, friend of Matt Smart and volunteer at SchoolBOX, was instrumental in these fundraising efforts. In total, St.Gregory’s school raised $1820.00 for Matt’s Dream classroom with SchoolBOX! We are so proud of their efforts.
