In 2012, Brett’s School in Managua was completed. It provides a permanent home for the Jezreel School which began under a tree 8 years ago in the La Primavera community in Managua, Nicaragua. This amazing school, which had not received funding from the Nicaraguan government, managed to operate based on the sheer faith and determination of its teachers. Over the course of its short history the school was forced to move locations 7 times as it could not afford the rent which was as little as $30 a month.
Brett’s School provides an opportunity for hundreds of children to learn how to read and write. The 9 classrooms and 6 washrooms facility was named in memory of Brett Bentley Crawford who was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 19. Brett was a close personal friend of SchoolBOX Founder, Tom Affleck.
Brett’s friends and family were so moved by the community in Jezreel, that they decided to raise money to build a second school. In 2013, the Brett Bentley Crawford #2 School was completed in Tipitapa. The 4 classroom, 3 washroom structure empowers over 244 children to get a basic education.
In 2014, the 3rd Brett School, located in the community of Jardines de Apoyo, in Masaya was completed. The 4 classroom school also has 4 washrooms, a sports area, and water fountains.
In 2015, the 4th Brett School was completed in the Bella Cruz in Ciudad Sandino, just outside of Nicaragua’s capital. The 6 classroom structure empowers hundreds of primary and secondary level students to get a basic education.
In 2016, SchoolBOX worked hand in hand with the Brett Bentley Crawford Foundation to build the Brett #5 School. Located in Masaya, the school began when Mirna Martinez, a community mother, began teaching children in her home who were too small to walk the long distance to the nearest school. Mirna Martinez then donated her own land to the Ministry of Education so that SchoolBOX and the BBC Foundation could build a brand new school with 2 classrooms and washrooms with running water.
In 2017, the BBC Foundation is working towards raising funds for their sixth project at Josefa Toleda de Aguerri School. The school, named after a famous Nicaragua feminist and activist for women’s education, is run down, crumbling and overcrowded forcing the 5th and 6th graders to learn outside under trees. This new school will leave a lasting legacy in their community.
