February 2014 – First Bricks at Brett #3 School Monumental for Jardines de Apoyo
On February 19, 2014, SchoolBOX was excited to lay the first bricks for the Brett #3 School in Jardines de Apoyo. The day was filled with emotion as Brett’s father, Richard Crawford, explained how his daughter lived her life with such passion to defend those who had been forgotten and left out. He explained that Brett’s family could not be happier that her legacy continues to empower those who have been left behind – over a hundred children in one of Nicaragua’s poorest communities.
For more than 14 years, the children in Jardines de Apoyo have been going to school under makeshift shacks and tents (school photo above). Brett’s story touched community leaders, parents, teachers and even delegates from the government and Ministry of Education. They each expressed their gratitude of finally being able to realize their dream of having a real school for their children. This third school in Brett’s honour will consist of four classrooms (one sponsored by Building Walls of Wisdom) and a sports area (thanks to our Ski 4 SchoolBOX champs).
