March 2017 – First bricks ceremony for Josefa Toledo
On March 1st, the first bricks were laid at Josefa Toledo School! It was a proud day for our SchoolBOX team, as this new three-classroom school will provide hundreds of children with the proper conditions to get an education and ultimately break the cycle of poverty.
This is the sixth school being generously funded by the BBC Foundation, in memory of Brett Bentley Crawford. Brett’s five existing namesake schools are currently enabling over 2000 children to get an education in Nicaragua, a stunning tribute to the life of this beautiful person. This school is particularly special because it also named after Josefa Toledo School, the Nicaraguan feminist, author, and advocate of women’s education.
SchoolBOX Founder Tom Affleck was in Nicaragua for the first blocks ceremony and joined Ronald Chavarria and our wonderful construction crew and staff for this celebration. A group of volunteers from Ottawa and Toronto will join us in just a week’s time, to help build the school and make education possible for its students.
