April 2014 – Skiers4SchoolBOX Trade Snow for Sun

After almost a year of anticipation, some of Canada’s best cross country skiers came to Nicaragua to help Make Education Possible and inspire kids to achieve their dreams.  Perianne Jones from Almonte, Ontario spearheaded this amazing group of eight athletes. Three of the group members, Perianne Jones, Emily Nishikawa and Mark Arendz, had the honour of competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia this winter as part of Team Canada.

Also in this group are the self-dubbed ‘Golden Girls’, three vibrant women from Toronto with great love and energy to share with the kids.  Last but not least, Ruth Tamas of Almonte, fun lover and adventurer, is here to make a difference!

Over the course of 10 days, this group’s biggest achievement was digging the hole for the washroom septic tank. The entire group rallied to do this for days on end so that the SchoolBOX construction team could use the time to keep the progress on the school moving forward.

The entire group had so much energy that the kids were lining up for rides in wheelbarrows and insisting on games of soccer and baseball every afternoon. This group’s energy will be remembered even after they leave.
