August 2015 – Running for SchoolBOX

In 2010, Joe Rios went to Nicaragua with SchoolBOX to participate in an international volunteer experience. Joe helped build a classroom for the Ruben Dario community in Leon and helped empower students to get a basic education. Since his trip in Joe has fulfilled a dream of running a marathon on each continent while empower dozens of charities. Once overweight and asthmatic, Joe has completely changed his life and has inspired hundreds of his friends to give back.

Joe has continued to be an ambassador for SchoolBOX since 2010. In January of this year, he organized a 5km Polar Dash in -40C weather in Ottawa for a hundred of his closest friends.  This event was a warm up for Joe’s ultra marathon in Antarctica and his half marathon in Chile later on in 2015. The event raised over $5000 which helped support 1000 students with educational packages in Nicaragua. The majority of educational packages were delivered to the Ruben Dario School which he helped build 5 years earlier.
