January 2017 – Breaking Ground on Cristo Rey School

January was a busy month for SchoolBOX in Nicaragua, as Ronald Chavarria and our construction team got ready to break ground on a five-classroom building project at Cristo Rey School in Tipitapa. We first learned about the school in 2011 when they were studying in makeshift sheet metal and wood structures, and the children were forced to carry their own desks and chairs to school because the classroom did not have any lockable doors. We have supported the students of Cristo Rey with school supplies since then, and last week we were so overjoyed to break ground on the first of five new classrooms for the school!

Enrollment has skyrocketed from just 50-60 children in 2012, to over 1000 children today. These five new classrooms will not only allow more space for children to receive classes, they will also contain a new library and administrative area that will greatly improve the quality of education delivered at Cristo Rey.

SchoolBOX is grateful to our funding partner, Good Neighbours, for generously donating the money to build these classrooms. We are happy to work alongside supportive partners who share our vision to ‘Make Education Possible’ in Nicaragua for the country’s most vulnerable kids. Cristo Rey will soon be part of this legacy!

In 2012, kids were learning in this sheet metal and wood structure with no real doors.
