July 2019 – Indigenous Youth Empowering Students (IYES) Trip Welcomed Wet’suwet’en and Nis’ga Nations to Nicaragua!
The SchoolBOX family was so grateful to welcome an incredible volunteer team to Nicaragua in July representing both Wet’suwet’en and Nis’ga First Nations. The team, brought together by IYES Leader Danielle Wall, worked hard on the build site of the Heroes de Nanaime School outside of Granada, Nicaragua, where they helped to install the foundation of the school and quickly saw the walls emerging.
The IYES team held a beautiful cultural exchange day with the kids, teachers and parents where they shared traditional dances, drama and history with each other. They played hard with our construction team and staff on the baseball pitch and learned some new soccer moves from the kids at the school. The volunteers ended the week by making bannock and niwus (Indian ice cream) for the community and kids. The generosity and love of this team was astounding.
We are grateful to the Michelle Jean Foundation and Makerhouse for providing youth travel scholarships to help offset flight costs and to the team for their amazing fundraising. We’re thrilled to be running our next Indigenous Youth Empowering Student (IYES) trip in March 2020. Spaces and youth scholarships are limited so tell all your friends to apply asap! If you would like to empower a First Nations, Metis or Inuit youth under 29 to experience the power of ‘making education possible’ for kids, you can donate at www.schoolbox.ca/iyes or email email@example.com for more info.
