SchoolBOX North Lunch Program

We are so excited that Marshall Moore, Anishinaabe chef trained at the Seven Generations Institute in Kenora, joined the SchoolBOX team in June 2019 to run a successful healthy school lunch program in Wabauskang First Nation for all kids on reserve.  He planned out a month of amazing meals for kids as part of this pilot project and provided 285 lunches to kids in June!  Each lunch included a healthy main course, two beverages and three snacks packaged and delivered daily on the school bus.

The pilot received amazing feedback from kids, families and teachers.  Thanks to the funds raised at the first annual Picnic with Purpose fundraiser on June 15th, we have now been able to install a new dishwasher in Wabauskang and are purchasing reusable lunch kits, water bottles and eco friendly supplies for the 2019-2020 school year.

The program goal is to help ‘make education possible’ for kids K-12 by providing healthy food at school to support their learning and affirm the Truth & Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) recommendations to eliminate the education gap between Indigenous & non-Indigenous children and youth.

More than half of kids on reserve live in poverty in Canada (Statistics Canada 2016) and only 24% complete high school in 4 years(Auditor General 2018).

We’re thrilled to see the impacts first hand of research showing healthy food directly increases school attendance, improves classroom success and decreases involvement with child welfare services.  We’re really grateful to Terri Meekis and the Chief & Council of Wabauskang First Nation for their encouragement of their kids and their partnership with SchoolBOX!
