March 2018 – Volunteers build Tracy’s Hope #2 School
A group of enthusiastic Ottawa families traveled to Nicaragua over the March Break to help us construct the Tracy’s Hope #2 Classroom at Tezoatega School! Dina Bell-Laroche, a SchoolBOX Board Member, led the group as well as the fundraising effort for this classroom. We are blown away by Dina’s leadership, and her amazing heart for education in Nicaragua. The volunteers spent the week building in the community, alongside teachers and parents, and made their love for the children clear as they played with them and encouraged them to stay in school.
This school was built in honour of Dina’s sister Tracy Lee Nolan, who passed away at age 29 from cancer. This is the second classroom constructed in Tracy’s memory, and it will provide grade 5 and 6 students at Tezoatega School with a safe and spacious place to study. They were previously learning under an open-air thatched roof rancho that was exposed to the elements.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, and we hope to see you back in Nicaragua one day soon!
