Shoal Lake #40 recently opened their doors to the Harvey Redsky Memorial School in September 2021. The First Nation school provides education to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8! SchoolBOX and the staff and students of the Harvey Redsky Memorial School would like to partner in order to update their library collection and space. Please read on and help us ‘anishinaabe-gikinoo’amaadiwin’ and make education possible!

SchoolBOX and the staff and students at Harvey Redsky Memorial School are working together to create a library collection filled with Indigenous content and local Indigenous art while supporting the efforts of language revitalization for the students by securing Ojibway language resources. The goal of our partnership is to help address the gaps in education and support every student’s inherit right to education!

Shoal Lake #40 First Nation is an Ojibway First Nation located in the Eastman Region of Manitoba and the Kenora District of Ontario. The Treaty 3 First Nation has a population of 655 registered band members and 305 on-reserve members. The Harvey Redsky Memorial School has approximately 60 students currently enrolled.

Many First Nation communities were impacted negatively by Indian Residential Schools and Indian Day Schools. This resulted in the loss of language, culture, family and community relationships, and identity. Today, the majority of students are being raised by survivors or their children. The impacts of residential schools continue today with inequitable access to learning resources and underfunding for First Nations schools. The library is needed to address gaps in education and promote student success and literacy. We firmly believe that providing the Harvey Redsky Memorial School with an updated library collection, will foster Indigenous-owned education and increase the well-being and quality of life for First Nations students!
Join us to help empower this First Nations school with a fully stocked library!
