Pelican Falls First Nations High School is located just outside of Sioux Lookout, in Northern Ontario. It is one of two First Nations schools that services the many high school students coming off Northern reserves to pursue their education. The students live in boarding houses on the school’s campus throughout the school year, with visits to their home communities a few times throughout the year. The school’s campus is isolated, being approximately 20 minutes outside of town, and has no library.
Our SchoolBOX team partnered with the education staff at the school and decided to bring mini-libraries to each classroom, with books handpicked by each teacher. We simply wanted to get Indigenous authored and culturally empowering books in the hands of the youth and we wanted to support the educators in their classrooms!
Our SchoolBOX team will be heading to Pelican Falls in the fall of 2022 to install the books and shelves into each classroom! More to come on this – stay tuned for photos of this project!
Miigwetch to the head staff team, Darrin and Nathan, for your work on this project!
