November 2014 – Inspirational Volunteers in November
Christena and Barry Holden came to Nicaragua in May of 2013. They were so touched by the beauty of the Nicaraguan people that they wanted to return again. In November of this year, they returned with a group of their peers and set off to help build the Los Salgados School in Telica, Nicaragua.
The international volunteer group was comprised of 17 eager Canadians who worked hand in hand with students, parents and teachers from the Los Salgados community to build their school. The parents were so excited because their community was learning in a makeshift structure that they had build. Previously, the children were taking classes in a converted goat barn.
The community was extremely shy when the volunteers first arrived, but quickly warmed up with all members of the volunteer group. The children were so happy playing games, singing songs and showing volunteers the sights and sounds of their community.
The volunteer group was beyond enthusiastic and helped the community and construction team by shovelling dirt, digging holes, pouring concrete and helping with making rebar columns. Our construction crew was so proud of the volunteer group, as they helped with the foundation which was the most difficult piece of the construction process.
When the volunteer group left, tears were shed and many hugs were exchanged. They were now a part of the Los Salgados Family.
SchoolBOX is currently filling groups in their volunteer experience for February 12-21st and March 12-21st of next year. There are also several spots open in the Summer of 2015. We would love to see you in Nicaragua next year.
